What is Pensky Martens Closed Cup Flash Point Tester?
Apr 14, 2026
The Pensky Martens Closed Cup Flash Point Tester is a globally recognized precision flash point measuring instrument that uses the closed cup method to measure the lowest temperature at which flammable liquid vapor, when mixed with air and exposed to a fire source, undergoes instantaneous flash ignition (i.e., the closed cup flash point).
1, Core principle
Sealed test: Inject the sample (approximately 70mL) into a standard sealed oil cup, cover and seal it.
Stir heating: Heat at a constant rate (usually 5-6 ℃/min) and stir continuously to ensure uniform heating and stable vapor concentration of the sample.
Timing ignition: When the temperature reaches the predetermined range, the stirring is paused, and the instrument automatically probes the fire source (electric spark or gas flame) into the cup to observe whether it flashes.
Determination of flash point: The lowest temperature at which a momentary blue flash (non sustained combustion) occurs is the closed flash point of the sample.
2, Main structure
Test cup: A metal sealed cup with standard volume.
Heating system: controllable temperature electric furnace or heating module.
Mixing device: motor-driven mixing blade to remove the oxide film on the liquid surface.
Ignition system: electronic igniter (high-voltage spark) or gas flame.
Temperature control and detection: high-precision thermometer, flash photoelectric detector, automatic shutter and control system.
3, Applicable standards and samples
Mainstream standards: GB/T 261 (China), ASTM D93 (USA), ISO 2719 (International).
Applicable samples:
Petroleum products: diesel, kerosene, lubricating oil, fuel oil.
Chemicals: solvents, paints, resins, biodiesel Anton Paar.
Other: Liquids that easily form a film on the surface when heated.
Measurement range: usually 40 ℃~370 ℃.
4, Difference from Open Mouth Cup Method
Closed cup (Pensky Martin): measures the flash point of a closed system, with a lower value, more conservative and safe, suitable for light oil products and solvents.
Open cup (Cleveland): measures the flash point of open systems, with a high value, suitable for heavy lubricants and asphalt.
