What is vlf cable testing?

Jan 04, 2026

VLF Cable Testing refers to a non-destructive diagnostic test for medium and high voltage cables, using Very Low Frequency (typically 0.1–0.01 Hz) AC voltage as the test signal. It is a key method for evaluating the insulation performance of power cables without causing damage to the cable structure.

Core Principles

Power cables in operation are usually subjected to 50/60 Hz AC voltage. However, when testing long cables, using power-frequency AC will lead to huge capacitive current, requiring bulky and high-power test equipment, which is not practical for field testing.

VLF technology solves this problem:

At very low frequencies, the capacitive reactance XC=2πfC1 of the cable increases significantly, so the charging current is greatly reduced.

The test equipment can be made small and portable, suitable for on-site testing of long-distance cables (e.g., cross-linked polyethylene XLPE cables, oil-paper insulated cables).

The VLF voltage applied during the test simulates the electric field distribution of power-frequency voltage in the cable insulation, which can effectively detect hidden defects such as insulation aging, voids, and moisture intrusion.

Common Test Methods

VLF AC Withstand Voltage Test

Apply a specified VLF voltage to the cable for a certain duration (e.g., 60 minutes). If the cable insulation does not break down and the leakage current is stable, it is considered qualified.

This method is mainly used for acceptance testing of new cables and periodic maintenance testing of in-service cables.

VLF Partial Discharge (PD) Test

While applying VLF voltage, detect partial discharge signals inside the cable insulation. Partial discharge is an early sign of insulation failure.

By analyzing the magnitude, frequency, and phase of partial discharge, the type and location of insulation defects can be judged, realizing predictive maintenance of cables.

Advantages

Portability: Small equipment size and light weight, easy to carry and operate on site.

Non-destructive: The test voltage will not damage the healthy insulation, avoiding accelerated aging of the cable caused by DC high voltage testing (traditional method).

High Sensitivity: Can detect tiny insulation defects that are difficult to find with conventional tests.

Application Scenarios

Acceptance testing of new medium/high voltage power cables.

Periodic diagnostic testing of in-service cables in power grids, industrial plants, and urban power supply systems.

Testing of cables after fault repair to verify insulation recovery.
